Introduction to Technology &
Its Evolution

Unit 1

Picture
Our first unit takes students on a journey through the history of technology. They will explore different types of technology and understand how technology has evolved over time. By looking at the impacts of technology on society, students will gain a solid foundation for understanding the role that technology plays in our lives.
We believe that an appreciation for the history of technology gives us perspective on our current technological landscape. It's fascinating to see how far we've come, from the invention of the wheel to the creation of the internet. This unit sets the stage for the rest of the course by providing a broad overview of technology and its evolution.
In this unit, students will explore the history of technology and its different types. They will learn about how technology has evolved over time and the impacts it has had on society. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, students will develop a solid foundation for understanding technology's role in our lives.

 CONCEPTS TO RESEARCH

  1. Technological Determinism: This is the theory that technology shapes society and that societal change is largely driven by technological innovation.
  2. Technological Revolutions: Understand the concept of different technological ages/revolutions (Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Industrial Revolution, Information Age).
  3. Tech Adoption Lifecycle: The stages technology goes through from innovation to widespread adoption.
  4. Impact of Technology on Society: How technology has influenced various aspects of society like communication, transportation, healthcare, and work.

Actives

Timeline Activity:

Create a timeline of significant technological advancements starting from the Stone Age to the present Information Age. This will help you visualize how technology has evolved over thousands of years. You can use online tools, or even just a long strip of paper, to map out key inventions and discoveries. Research and mark at least one significant technological advancement for each era.

Research Project:

Pick one transformative technology from any era - it could be the printing press from the Renaissance, the steam engine from the Industrial Revolution, or the internet from the Information Age. Write a short essay or create a presentation detailing how this technology came about, what problem it solved, and how it affected society and culture at the time.

Role-Play Activity:

In groups, role-play how people's daily lives changed before and after a particular technological advancement. For example, you could show how communication changed before and after the invention of the telephone or how travel evolved with the advent of cars. This exercise will give you a more personal and relatable understanding of the impact of technology on our lives.

Debate:

Hold a class debate on the question: "Is technology always beneficial?" Split into two teams: one arguing that technological advancement always leads to progress and benefits society, and the other arguing that technology can sometimes have negative effects or unintended consequences. Remember, there's no absolute right or wrong answer here – the goal is to develop critical thinking about the implications of technology.
